ok, i know what you’re gonna say. “but Bob, polar bears and penguins don’t live on the same pole.” but none of you were gonna say, “but Bob, how did that bear get it’s paws on a bowling ball?”

the answer is simple, the same way he got that plane ticket to the south pole — he bought it.

National Penguin Awareness Day

Happy National Penguin Awareness Day! Yes, it’s January 20th again and it’s our little flippered friends’ day to get some attention, aside from some little ceremony that’s happening on the east coast (j/k – congratulations, Mr. President!).

Anyway, be sure to take some time today to learn or do something relating to penguins whether it be learning more about them, visiting them at the zoo or aquarium, reading awesome books about them, or even just spending countless hours on flickr or YouTube looking at them. Here’s a few to get you started.

Dogs to help protect penguins on Australian island

The Little Blue Penguin population has always been a great concern for the local residents and governments of Australia. Each year their numbers are decreased due to introduced predators such as foxes and dogs.

Maremma Sheepdog

Conservationists are confident that recruiting Maremmas, a breed of sheepdog from Italy, can be used to help protect a colony of Little Blues on Middle Island in Warrnambool. Maremmas bound with flocks of birds and have been shown to protect their flocks from predators. The idea was originally suggested by a concerned community member, Alan ‘Swampy’ Marsh, who has successfully used Maremma sheepdogs to protect his free range chickens from foxes.

So far their results are positive and the program looks very promising. The Warrnambool City Council will extend the trial for another 12 months, hoping to see another increase during their breeding cycle ultimately letting the Little Blue population on Middle Island to regenerate back to their higher numbers from years ago. Definitely an excellent example of the community and government working together to improve biodiversity in their environment.

Congratulations to SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida, for the hatching of 3 new penguin chicks. 24-day old and a 12-day old Magellanic (left & center) as well as a 8-day old Rockhoppper join the roster of over 200 penguins who call SeaWorld their home.
